Syros (also called Syra) was named sovereign of Cyclades and nymph of the Aegean. Homeland of philosopher Ferekydis, teacher of Pythagoras, Syros is well known since ancient years. The foundation of the medieval city, built on a hill, is connected with Francs.
Syros The city is even today one of the island's most beautiful sights with its pavements and traditional houses that stand one over the other.

Ermoupoli, capital of the island and the whole Cyclades, a creation of 1821 revolution against Ottoman Turks, is a monument with eminent buildings, unique architecture and romanticism influenced from the west.

In the picturesque coastal villages of Kini, Vari, Foinika, Galissa, Delagratsia, Mega Yialos, with their clean sea, one can enjoy swimming and eating fresh fish.

The marvelous sandy beaches and the plenty archaic monuments make Syros an enviable island worthy to be visited.

PLACES OF INTEREST
The Temple of Resurrection, at the top of the hill, with its beautiful view.

The Churches of Metamorphosis (Metropolis), Koimisi tis Theotokou (with the Icon of Virgin Mary, painted by El Greco), Ayios Yeoryios (with famous monuments).

The Town Hall, at Miaouli square. It is one of the major Town Halls of Greece, built after the drawings of the famous Bavarian architect Chiller from 1876 until 1881. In this building is also found the Archaeological Museum of Syra, where are accommodated a lot of important discoveries.

The Municipal Library, where exist infrequent publications with particular interest for the students.

The Theatre Apollon, a micrography of Scala of Milan.

The Temple of Ayios Nicolaos, that is the third biggest church of Greece, with the reach decoration of its interior.

The Monument of the Unknown Fighter, at the entry of Ayios Nicolaos is a unique monument dedicated to the unknown freedom fighters.

The district Vaporia, next to the sea, with the most beautiful mansion houses of the city, which have wonderful balconies at their facade and painted decorations at their interiors. All these show the old glory of Ermoupolis.

The temple of Ayios Dimitrios, near the city. There is a custom, according to which, each time that a boat pass near the church someone rings the bell and the captain of the boat greets.

Ano Syros was built after the conquest of the island by the Venecians in 1207. It still maintains its old form, with the narrow graphic streets and camaras, the old churches and the old medieval houses. Because of the Franc conquerors most residents of the town are Catholics. There is interest on the Catholic Temples of Ayios Ioannis, of Virgin Mary Karmilou and of Ayios Yeorios. At the top of the hill, behind Ayios Yeoryios are ruins of the medieval town.

Ermoupolia, organised every summer from July until August, are cultural events including concerts, theatre etc.

TRANSPORTATION
To Syros: There is daily coastal connection with Piraeus (4 hours with a ferry, 2 hours with a catamaran) and air connection with Athens Airport (25 minutes). There is also coastal connection with other islands of Cyclades and Dodecanese, as well as with Crete and Thessaloniki.

At Syros: At the island there is possibility of locomotion with local buses (tel:2286082575), while there are also rented cars, motorcycles and ships.

Gastronomy: Meat with potatoes cooked in a timber-oven.
You should buy: Loukoumi delights, halva pies, gruyere, handmade footwear.
Fishing: Fish catches have been decreased due to overfishing.
Sailing: Sailing at the Sailing Club of Syros (tel:2281088666).
Swimming: At Galissa, one of the most famous beaches, at Kini, at Delfini and at Lia. You can swim also at Grammata, but you have to reach it with a boat. Other nice beaches are Vari, Azolimnos, Foinikas and Ahladi.
