Naxos is the biggest island of Cyclades, inhabited by 15,200 people. Its rich valleys full of olive trees, fruit trees, horticultural and vines, as well as the fields and the farming give to Naxos independence as for the main products that it needs.
Naxos The city has many sights worthy to be visited, narrow streets and a lot of stone houses, while at its backside brand new houses and hotels are built.

The beautiful villages of the island can offer peaceful vacations. Apollonas (Apollo) is one of the most picturesque coastal villages of the island. There are located the well known since antiquity quarries of marble. The village has 100 residents and abstains 48 kilometers from the capital.

Apirathos, one of Cyclades' most beautiful villages, is built at Fanari. The village maintains its form almost intact since the period of Venetians. Apirathos has 760 residents. Other villages worthy to be visited are Ayia Anna Ayios Prokopios, Koronas, Engares, Melanes, Trayea, Filoti, built in the green environment and clean waters.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Portara, the entry of Apollo Temple, was started to be built during the means of the 6th century BC. by the tyrant of Naxos Lygdamis, at the islet that the locals call Palatia. The Temple was never finished, but connected to the tragic story of Ariadni.

The Ancient city. At the north of the port are found relics of the Mycenaean Agora. Part of the Ancient City is in the sea.

The Castle is undeniably the most enchanting part of the town of Naxos. Passing through Trani Porta you can admire the tower with its fighting places still being in their very first positions. Many of the Castle's houses were built during 14th and 15th centuries and have on their facades Venetian blazons. In the Castle you can see the Venetian Church, the building of the Ursulins, the Catholic Metropolis and the residence of the Catholic Bishop.

The oldest church of the island is Panayia Vlaherniotissa with beautiful Icons, such as the ones of Panayia (Virgin Mary) and Prophet Elias, painted by the Cretan artist Angelos, student of El Greco. Beautiful Icons you will also see at Zoodohos Piyi (Metropolis), which is built at the area of Ancient Agora. The small church Panayia Myrtidiotissa at the port is built on a small islet.

Belonias Tower, on the road to Galanados, was the residence of the Venetian sovereign of the area. There is also the "twin" church of Ayios Ioannis (Saint John), which was used both from Orthodox and Catholics, too. The tower impresses the visitors with its imposing form and offers unique view to the capital of Naxos.

The Archaeological Museum of Naxos is located at the Commercial School of Jesuits and includes appreciable exhibits.

The Museum of Metropolis, an underground museum, at the front of the Metropolis, between four churches next to relics of an ancient town of 1100 BC.

LOCAL EVENTS
The feast of Ayios Nicodemos on 14th July is the biggest feast of the island. Dionysia, cultural events organized by the Municipality, take place during the second half of July.

To Naxos: There is coastal connection from Piraeus, Paros and Syros.

Gastronomy: Local cheese, the sweet wine of Naxos and kefalopodia (local meat soup).
You should buy: Embroideries, woolies, honey, cheese, olives, olive oil, citron (as a sweat or as a drink) and walnuts.
Fishing: The fish caches have been decreased.
Sailing: You can leave your ship at one of the three harbours of Naxos or at Alikos. You can refill at Naxos port.
Swimming: At the beautiful and crowded beach of Ayios Prokopis with its thick sand, at the famous beach of Ayia Anna and at the clear sea of the immense Plaka. You will find crystal waters at Pyrgaki, Mikri Vigla and Ayiasos. Psili Ammos is situated next to a forest of Cedars.
