Kastelorizo,
the most distant island of Greece, abstains from the Turkish Coasts
almost 2 naval miles. Its official name Meyisti was given to it
because it's the biggest of a cluster of 14 small islands.
A beautiful and picturesque place, Kastelorizo, offers to its visitors
serene moments. Even thought during last years it has touristic
growth, its visitors are not many. Among them some really special,
such as Monachus-Monachus seals.
Harbour
and unique settlement of the island is Kastelorizo. It is said to
be the best natural harbour of Mediterranean. Traditional reach
houses unfold to the coastal line, infront of an imposing red rock.
The devastated, in our days, Castle, at the top of the rock, is
the one that gave the name to the island (Castello Rosso
Kastelorizo).
Next to the ruins is a turkish hamam and a restored windmill, while
below it Dorian columns reveal the point where is an excellently
maintained Temple-shaped Grave.
At
the village are the churches of Ayios Nicolaos and Ayios Dimitrios,
the Temple of Ayios Constantinos and Ayia Eleni with their intense
gothic characteristics, as well as a Pane.
At
the western side of Kastelorizo, is found the more important monument
of the island, Paleokastro. It's an ancient settlement with many
buildings and reservoirs. In the Dorian citadel of the 3rd century
BC is saved a sign that includes the name Meyisti. Also, at the
region, at the place called Limenari, are Cyclopean Walls.
At
the southern part of the island is Galazio Spileo (Blue Cavern),
also called Spileo Parasta or Fokiali. The cavern is well known
for its stalactites and the marvelous nuances that the water gives
to its walls. You can go to the Galazio Spileo with a boat.
Ayios
Yeoryios tou Vounou at Paleokastro region. 401 steps lead to that
Monastery which is surrounded from enormous rocks.
Castello
Rosso, the Castle of Meyisti, on the top of the rock, over the settlement,
as well as the Museum of the Castle where are exposed photographs,
murals and local costumes.
The
Temples of Ayios Nicolaos, Ayios Dimitrios, Ayios Constantinos and
Ayia Eleni and the Pane at the harbour.
Paleokastro
Cyclopean Walls at west and the Dorian Temple-shaped Grave under
the Castle.
Galazio
Spileo at Aheres. Ten natural reservoirs that collect the water
of rain, full of stalagmites and stalactites.
The
biggest feast of the island happens on the 20th day of July at Prophet
Elias day. On that day locals fall in the sea in order to honour
the Prophet. On the 13th day of September are organized festive
events for the island's freedom.
To
Kastelorizo: There is both coastal and air connection with Athens,
as well as a boat to Minor Asia coasts. The trip with a ferry from
Rhodes lasts almost 5 hours.
At Kastelorizo: Due to the fact that there is not a second settlement
at the island there is no public transportation. Small boats are
a good alternative way for locomotion.
